XPO Logistics accelerates decarbonisation plan with unprecedented new order for 165 electric trucks
Significant investment aims to help lower XPO´s greenhouse gas emissions in France by 25% by 2025
XPO, a leading provider of innovative and sustainable end-to-end logistics solutions across Europe, announced today that it has made an unprecedented new order for 165 electric heavy vehicles, representing the largest investment in this type of vehicle in France. The new electric trucks are intended to replace XPO's diesel-powered fleet in short-haul areas.
The company plans to make around 25% of its deliveries in France with electric vehicles by 2030, reducing its CO2 emissions by more than 26,000 tonnes. With its partner Renault Trucks, XPO is transforming its fleet to comply with forthcoming regulations on deliveries in urban areas, while also supporting its customers in achieving their own decarbonization objectives. Overall, XPO aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions in France by 25% by 2025, compared to 2019.
These electric vehicles operate without directly producing CO2 emissions and considerably reduce noise and air pollution, making them particularly well suited for deliveries in congested urban areas. They also emit fewer fine particles and less vibration, which reduces driving fatigue. Each truck is equipped with a 360° camera that reduces blind spots for optimum safety.
Bruno Kloeckner, Managing Director – France, XPO Logistics, said: "This is our second significant order for electric trucks following the order we announced in January 2023, showing how deeply committed XPO is to reducing our carbon footprint. Our multi-energy transition strategy is based on a set of solutions and initiatives that complement each other, particularly when it comes to fuels. Since our first electric test in 2021, we have been impressed by this technology, which has been very popular with drivers as well. We also are renewing our gas-powered vehicles and increasing use of biofuels. In addition, we are developing innovative solutions such as multimodal rail and river transport, and have recently launched a project based on hydrogen. We believe this approach makes XPO an attractive partner, helping our customers on their decarbonisation journeys as well. It also makes employees feel proud about belonging to a company that is a leading player in the transformation of our sector."
"Renault Trucks is proud to support XPO Logistics in its ecological transition. By investing massively in electric transport solutions, which are essential to the decarbonisation of logistics flows, XPO is demonstrating a strong social commitment," continues Christophe Martin, Managing Director of Renault Trucks France. "This new collaboration marks an important step in the sustainable development of transport, which remains essential to the smooth running of society."
XPO Logistics, a major player in environmentally-friendly freight transport
This ground-breaking order is one of the company's latest investments to help its customers establish more responsible supply chains and reduce its own impact on the environment. XPO has one of the most modern and safety-equipped transport fleets in Europe.
XPO is pursuing its long-standing commitment to more sustainable road transport in France through a number of initiatives, including:
- Signing on to the Charte Objectif CO2 of the French Ministry of Ecological Transition and Solidarity and ADEME (French Environment and Energy Management Agency) since its creation in 2008.
- Introducing alternative fuel vehicles in 2015, with trucks running on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG), which reduce fine particle emissions and emit 70% less nitrogen dioxide, and trucks running on biogas, which also reduce CO2 emissions by 80%. The XPO fleet in France now includes 230 of these alternative-fuel vehicles.
- Investing in 500 Renault Trucks vehicles in 2020, including trailer trucks equipped with diesel engines that comply with Euro VI-d, the strictest European standard for emissions measurement and control.
- Announcing a major investment in early 2023 with a firm order for 65 16 and 19 tonne Renault Trucks electric rigids, with 35 additional on option.
- Launching LESS® (Low Emissions Sustainable Solution) in April 2023, an innovative initiative that replaces the amount of diesel used for a customer with HVO biofuel from supplies in XPO's fuel distribution network, which is used for transport operations for all its customers.
- Deploying technologies to ensure the fleet's good condition and avoid over-consumption, including a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) that provides access to vehicle maintenance histories and stores information in a central database, and Goodyear's Drive-Over-Reader solution that measures tire pressure and tread depth using sensors installed on the ground.
- Providing ongoing eco-driving training for company drivers as well as training in alternative energies for sales teams to provide customers with the best possible service.
