In the run-up to Black Friday, this innovation meets the need for home delivery returns and joins other initiatives to help businesses reduce their environmental impact

XPO, a leading provider of innovative and sustainable end-to-end logistics solutions across Europe, has deployed a new reverse last-mile delivery service in France, collecting heavy and bulky products from consumers for repair in after-sales service or reconditioning for resale. Initially developed for a major sports equipment retailer, this solution meets the needs of a growing number of consumers who do not wish to buy new products but prefer instead to purchase second-hand equipment or repair services offered by retail chains.

Through this service, XPO Logistics engages with retail customers to pick up electric bikes and bulky fitness equipment from consumers´ homes and transport the items to the nearest XPO distribution center. From there, the items are returned through XPO´s nationwide network to retailers’ collection centres, where they are reconditioned for resale or recycling.

In parallel, XPO Logistics collects other bulky products that require after-sales service, such as ping-pong tables and trampolines. To reduce the carbon footprint of these operations in the Lyon and Villeurbanne regions, XPO has teamed up with Fends La Bise, a carrier equipped with high-capacity cargo bikes, specialised in the urban delivery by bicycles.

In the run-up to Black Friday, XPO Logistics is preparing to deliver increasing volumes of goods for its retail and specialist customers, particularly in the furniture, decoration, home equipment, high-tech, DIY and gardening sectors.

The company offers a nationwide, high-capacity pallet distribution and last-mile delivery network, a specialised and sustainable fleet, and the expertise of its dedicated teams to design tailor-made last-mile delivery solutions for B2B and B2C companies. XPO Logistics develops solutions to continually reduce the environmental impact of its transport and logistics operations, promote a circular economy and meet the high expectations of its customers. The new deployment of reverse last-mile delivery is a concrete example of this commitment, as is XPO's investments in an alternative-fuel fleet and multimodal transport solutions, LESS® (Low Emission Sustainable Solution), and truck reconditioning.

Frédéric Aziron, director of palletised and last-mile distribution - France, XPO Logistics, said: "We have developed a new last-mile delivery model that demonstrates our ability to meet our customers' challenges, whatever they may be. This solution is both innovative and agile enough to adapt to customer needs. The fact that it contributes to a circular economy is an additional source of pride for us and consistent with our continued progress in reducing the environmental impact of our industry."
