XPO, a leading provider of freight transportation services, has announced the addition of a new digital capability to further enhance its last mile service. The company specialises in the home delivery of heavy or bulky goods in the Iberian Peninsula, and offers a state-of-the-art consumer experience managed by its proprietary technology.

XPO deployed its purpose-built last mile technology platform in 2021 following three years of development to manage all aspects of the delivery process. The system’s latest enhancement calculates the driver’s estimated time of arrival on the day of delivery according to the route and GPS position of the vehicle, and calls the consumer's phone to communicate the timing.

The announcement follows XPO’s earlier launch of new, interactive features for consumers, including the ability to purchase product assembly, installation and other value-added services on a mobile phone, and the option to sign the order receipt without contact. The homeowner can also trace the shipment in real time via a link sent by SMS or WhatsApp, and will receive a follow-up call if the message has not been read.

Massimo Marsili, managing director – Southern Europe and Morocco, XPO, said: "We are proud to be both a last mile market leader and an innovation leader in the heavy goods space in Iberia. Our ability to consistently deliver quality service and a first-class experience is driving the exponential growth of our last mile service in the Peninsula. We have built an exciting digital ecosystem for years of cutting-edge enhancements ahead.”

The company’s last mile innovation strategy is to provide convenience, flexibility, ease-of-use and customisation across the end-to-end consumer experience. A delivery can be tailored to preferences specified by the homeowner in advance — for example, delivery inside or outside the home, placement in a particular room, installation or assembly, and removal and recycling of the old product on request.

Beyond last mile, XPO is a leading innovator of other transport services in Europe, including technology-enabled truckload, less-than-truckload, truck brokerage, managed transport and freight forwarding. The company conforms its solutions to customer-specific needs across a range of consumer, trade and industrial sectors and world-class events.
