XPO Logistics, a leading provider of freight transportation services, has announced the introduction of the first fully electric truck in its Spanish fleet, jointly with Volvo Trucks. The new Volvo FL Electric two-axle truck is designed for clean and quiet operation, with a range of 300 kilometers. It will be dedicated to night deliveries for the Inditex group in central Madrid. XPO will monitor performance with the goal of reducing carbon emissions in its business.

Massimo Marsili, managing director – Southern Europe and Morocco, XPO Logistics, said, “The addition of the Volvo FL Electric truck to our Spanish fleet is an important step forward in the environmental sustainability of our operations. We will continue to explore innovations in alternative power and work with our customers and suppliers to achieve greener supply chains.”

Giovanni Bruno, general manager of Volvo Trucks Spain, said, “We are proud to launch our first 100% electric vehicle — and the fact that the new Volvo FL Electric is the first electric truck in XPO’s Spanish fleet is doubly satisfying for us.”

A strong commitment to sustainability

XPO has one of the most modern and safety-equipped transport fleets in Europe, managed by digital technology for end-to-end efficiency. Approximately 98% of the company’s European fleet complies with Euro V, EEV and Euro VI emission regulations. XPO also has over 200 liquefied natural gas vehicles that emit up to 70% less nitrogen dioxide than the limit allowed in Europe. In Spain, the company’s 25 mega-trucks accommodate up to 65% more payload than typical trucks, helping to reduce CO2 emissions by about 20%.

Volvo Trucks has been developing and producing cleaner, more sustainable and quieter transport solutions for years. In 2018, Volvo Trucks announced the forthcoming launch of its new electric vehicles, and in 2021, that vision has become a reality in Spain as the Volvo FL Electric truck begins deliveries as part of XPO’s fleet.
