DS Smith incorporates a duo-trailer operated by XPO Logistics to improve the efficiency and sustainability of its logistics operations in Spain
The vehicle can carry up to twice as much cargo as a conventional trailer, reducing CO₂ emissions by 30% per journey and avoiding up to 120 trips per year on routes for the distribution of packaging and corrugated cardboard between Catalonia and the Valencian Community.
DS Smith, an International Paper company and leading provider of sustainable fibre-based packaging solutions, has incorporated a new duo-trailer operated by XPO Logistics,a leading provider of comprehensive, innovative and sustainable logistics solutions in Europe, into its operations. With this initiative, the company is reinforcing its commitment to a more efficient supply chain with a lower environmental impact.
Measuring 32 metres in length and with a maximum authorised weight of 70 tonnes, the duo-trailer consists of two large-capacity articulated trailers. This configuration allows for greater volume to be transported in a single journey, optimising logistics flows and significantly reducing the carbon footprint associated with transport.
The new ultra-long vehicle covers a daily round trip between DS Smith's corrugated cardboard factory in Penedés (Barcelona) and various customers in Valencia and the surrounding area, stopping at several of the company's packaging production centres. Its regular operation will reduce CO₂ emissions by 30% per journey and avoid up to 120 trips per year, strengthening a key logistical connection between plants and customers.
The addition of the duo-trailer is part of DS Smith's sustainability strategy, which focuses on promoting the circular economy, improving operational efficiency and reducing emissions throughout the supply chain. It is estimated that the vehicle's operation will prevent more than 21 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year, making a tangible contribution to the company's environmental goals.
Albert Forcadell, East Spain Cluster Director, says: "At DS Smith, we are committed to sustainability and efficiency throughout our operations. The addition of this duo-trailer demonstrates how we can reduce emissions, optimise our logistics processes and advance our ambition to offer environmentally responsible packaging solutions."
The duo-trailer, currently the highest-capacity vehicle authorised to circulate regularly in Spain, is gaining presence on national routes thanks to recent changes in the regulatory framework. Its use increases productivity, reduces operating costs and decreases the environmental impact of transport. In line with its commitment to innovation and sustainability, DS Smith is among the first companies in the country's packaging sector to integrate a duo trailer into its distribution logistics.
Carlos Rivero, Senior Director of Business Development – Southern Europe and Morocco, XPO Logistics, highlights: "It is a pleasure for XPO Logistics to accompany DS Smith in a project aligned with our vision of more efficient, innovative and sustainable logistics. The launch of this duo-trailer is a real example of how, by working together with our customers, we can optimise operations, reduce environmental impact and improve competitiveness in the supply chain."
DS Smith is committed to leading the transition of the entire industry towards a circular economy and making supply chains more efficient and sustainable. An example of this is its renowned 14-day 'Box-to-Box' operating model, in which packaging completes a full cycle in two weeks: from the production of the box and its delivery to the customer, to its subsequent collection, recycling to recover the fibres, and reuse to manufacture new boxes. In addition, the company has a unique approach based on its 'Circular Design Metrics' to design innovative, customised, sustainable and efficient packaging solutions together with its customers.
