Saint-Gobain and XPO Logistics aim to help 1,000 children learn to be safe on the roads by the end of 2025
XPO Logistics, a leading provider of innovative and sustainable end-to-end logistics solutions across Europe, is working in partnership with Saint-Gobain UK to keep children safer on the roads.
The Road Safety Team, comprising key personnel from both Saint-Gobain and XPO Logistics, along with Buzz, the project's Bee mascot, aims to visit 1,000 children in schools during 2025. The team will give talks and demonstrations on how to cross the road safely and show them where the danger areas are around an HGV. The team has already visited more than 250 children at three schools in 2024.
On each visit, the children discuss the importance of visibility on the roads with the Road Safety Team, along with identifying unsafe behaviours, and any other ‘big’ vehicles they have seen on the roads or may interact with.
The children also get to look around an HGV to find out where the blind spots are for the driver when they are on the road near such a big vehicle. The team also re-enacts the ‘stop, think, cross’ routine, so the children can practice how to cross the road safely.
Dan Myers, Managing Director – UK and Ireland, XPO Logistics, said: “Safety is an absolute priority for us within the business, and we are delighted to be involved in this excellent Saint-Gobain project. We want everyone to be safe on the roads, and this is a great way of instilling this message in children early on. The programme also allows for close collaboration with the local communities, and we look forward to growing it in 2026.”
So far this year, the Road Safety Team has visited five schools located close to Saint-Gobain UK manufacturing sites in:
- Lantern Lane Primary
- Gotham Primary School
- Brookside Primary School
- Kirkby Thore Primary School
- Church Fenton Primary School
Every child who attends one of these sessions receives a certificate, a Hi-Viz key ring, and a booklet of activities to complete at home.
Brian Fisher, Head of Distribution at Saint-Gobain UK, said, “Helping children to learn the essentials of road safety is incredibly rewarding, and the comments we get from the children about how much they’ve learned is exactly what we hope to achieve. We are keen to expand on the number of visits we can make with XPO Logistics year-on-year, as this is such an important message and is another way in which we can fulfil our purpose to Make the World a Better Home.”
