XPO, a leading provider of freight transportation services, has announced a significant reduction of more than 41 tonnes of CO2 emissions in Spain in 2022 through the use of roof-mounted photovoltaic energy panels on its facilities.

Over a two-year period, the company installed the panels at its transport and distribution sites in San Fernando de Henares (Madrid), Castellbisbal (Barcelona), A Coruña, Valladolid and Alicante. The installations total a peak rating of 300 kWp in photovoltaic energy, enabling the company to save 160,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) in 2022, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of about 120 houses.

In 2023, XPO will expand this initiative in Spain with a goal of at least doubling the photovoltaic peak rating attained in 2022; this will equate to a total surface area of at least 1,200 square metres of solar panels. The company expects to move forward with installations of additional solar panels at its sites in San Fernando de Henares and Castellbisbal, and will install the first panels at sites in Les Franqueses del Vallès (Barcelona), Seville and Gerona.

Massimo Marsili, managing director – Southern Europe and Morocco, XPO, said: "As a leader in high-value-added transport and distribution services, such as LTL and last mile delivery of bulky goods, we are committed to reducing the environmental footprint of our operations. By generating an increasing amount of electricity through photovoltaic sources, we are significantly improving the efficiency of our use of resources".

All XPO distribution centres and offices in Spain consume 100% renewable energy, and over 90% of the surface area of the sites is lit by LED technology. Now, XPO is investing in additional energy-efficient upgrades such as expanded use of low-consumption LED lighting, movement and daylight sensors, and programmable thermostats.

XPO is a leading innovator of transport services in Europe, including technology-enabled truckload, less-than-truckload, truck brokerage, managed transport, last mile and freight forwarding. The company tailors its solutions to customer-specific needs across a range of consumer, trade and industrial sectors and world-class events.
