The 13,000 square-metre, 104-bay site is XPO's largest cross-dock distribution centre on the Iberian Peninsula

XPO Logistics, a leading global provider of supply chain solutions, has opened a major new transport and distribution site in Castellbisbal, Barcelona. The 13,000 square metre platform includes 104 docks and is built on a total plot of 37,000 square metres. It is XPO's largest cross-dock distribution site on the Iberian Peninsula, serving as a national distribution centre in Catalonia and one of XPO's most important transport sites in Spain.

The Castellbisbal hub provides distribution services for less-than-truckload (LTL) palletized and partial loads, as well as nationwide overnight delivery services for leading companies in the textile, retail, automotive, cosmetics, industrial and chemical industries. XPO employs more than 120 people at the site, and more than 200 carriers move through its docks daily.

Massimo Marsili, managing director, transport – Southern Europe and Morocco, XPO Logistics, said: "We are delighted to expand our palletized solutions in Spain with the opening of a new, best-in-class distribution centre. Castellbisbal is an unparalleled strategic location at the heart of our LTL network. With this new capacity, we can manage volumes well above the current level of activity and provide seamless support to our customers as they grow.”

The Castellbisbal hub has the capacity to manage more than 3,400 pallets a day, which represents about 16% of the total number of pallets managed by XPO in Spain and Portugal. Four XPO mega-trucks leave the site daily to service routes running from Barcelona to Madrid and Valencia. The government-approved mega-trucks are 25.25 metres long, allowing 65% more cargo to be transported per shipment versus typical commercial trucks and reducing carbon emissions per trip by up to 20%.

XPO now has a total of 123,000 square metres of facility space in Catalonia, serving more than 1,900 customers. The company is the leader in the pallet transport sector in Spain, with a network of 60 sites that manage the delivery of more than 5 million pallets per year.

The Castellbisbal distribution centre has received LEED Gold energy certification, in line with the company's commitment to sustainability. All XPO sites in Spain consume 100% renewable energy.
