XPO Logistics Invests in Sustainability with Roll-Out of Intelligent LED Lighting at European Sites
XPO Logistics, a leading global provider of transport and logistics solutions, has launched a major European initiative to deploy intelligent LED lighting systems across its 5 million square meters of site surface space. The company expects to have the systems installed in approximately 75% of its total space in Europe by the end of 2020.
XPO had already installed LED in approximately 1 million square meters of surface space prior to launching the initiative in mid-2019. Since then, the company has expanded its LED footprint to an additional 1 million square meters of transport and logistics space. The systems use sensors to adjust to natural light and activity levels, automatically detecting the optimal lighting for employees. The company estimates that its LED initiative, when fully implemented, has the potential to save 2,200 tons of CO2 per year – equating to the CO2 absorbed by 75,000 trees.
Malcolm Wilson, chief executive officer of XPO Logistics Europe, said, “By investing in eco-friendly solutions, we support greener supply chains for our customers and safe, comfortable workspaces for our employees. We’re pleased to contribute to the health of our planet with the rapid adoption of intelligent LED technology across our European sites.”
XPO has a long history of integrating sustainability measures into its operations, including waste elimination in warehouses, use of alternative fuels and development of technologies that improve transportation efficiency. The company recently announced the purchase of 100 Stralis Natural Power tractors to serve customers in France, expanding its natural gas-powered fleet in Europe. In Spain, XPO sites use 100% renewable electricity.
