XPO Logistics Opens First Last Mile Hub in Spain

XPO Logistics, a leading global provider of transport and logistics solutions, has further expanded its service in Spain with the opening of two sites in the Port of Seville totalling almost 10,000 square metres. Both facilities are located in ZAL area (Zona de Actividades Logísticas del Puerto). One of the state-of-the-art facilities in the Andalusian capital serves as XPO’s inaugural last mile hub in Spain, and the other supports the company’s less-than-truckload (LTL) distribution and full truckload services. XPO has additional expansions of its last mile network underway in other provinces in Andalusia, including the opening of a hub in Malaga dedicated solely to last mile activities.

XPO is the largest provider of last mile logistics for heavy goods in North America, where the company facilitates over 13 million home deliveries per year. This service-intensive area of logistics specialises in the delivery, in-home assembly and installation of bulky goods, such as furniture, appliances and large electronics. The 40 cross-docks at the Seville site will be used to support the company’s growing last mile service, as well as its LTL pallet network in Spain and Portugal.

The opening event was attended by Javier Carnero Sierra, Councilor for Employment, Enterprise and Commerce of the Regional Government of Andalusia, Maria Carmen Clarisa Castreño, First Deputy Mayor of Seville, Manuel Gracia, President of the Port Authority of Seville, Massimo Marsili, Managing Director, Transport Solutions at XPO Logistics in Iberia and Ismael Clemente, Chief Executive Officer of MERLIN Properties, as well as local officials.

The Councilor for Employment, Enterprise and Commerce, Javier Carnero, congratulated the company for its investment in local expansion, contributing to the strength of the Sevillian and Andalusian economy, as well as the growing demand for e-commerce services. He highlighted the Andalusian Government's commitment to the digital economy and support for e-commerce, with the implementation of initiatives such as the Young Business Plan, the Digital Business Action Plan 2020 (PAED), and a line of incentives for digital marketing or online commerce projects through the IDEA Agency, to which 554 applications worth 20,5 million euros have already been submitted.

The President of the Port Authority of Seville, Manuel Gracia, expressed his satisfaction with XPO’s commitment in Seville and noted that, “the ZAL is instrumental in optimizing logistics, while capacity and quality of storage and distribution are key factors in increasing the Port’s competitiveness, alongside the maritime and railway terminals.

Luis Gomez, Managing Director of Transport, XPO Logistics Europe, said, “We are proud to pioneer the launch of last mile services for heavy goods in Spain. This is a growing area of opportunity for e-commerce companies and retailers. We look forward to using our extensive last mile expertise to help our customers in Spain build consumer loyalty through a superior in-home experience.”

XPO operates in all of the Andalusian provinces with a total of 10 owned and partner sites, including a centre in the Logistics Activities Area of Seville (ZAL). The company serves more than 500 customers of diverse sizes and sectors in the region. XPO’s LTL network in Spain includes 70 sites and transports more than 4 million pallets per year, making the company a national LTL leader.
