XPO Logistics, a leading global provider of transport and logistics solutions, has invested in two natural gas-powered tractors in its dedicated fleet to serve its customer Sociedade Central de Cervejas e Bebidas (SCC). Portugal-based SCC is part of the Heineken group.

The new Iveco Stralis tractors are powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and compressed natural gas (LNC+CNG). They are the latest additions to XPO’s fleet of alternative-fuel vehicles in Europe. The company uses more than 50 gas-powered trucks in France for urban deliveries in the Paris area, and two biogas trucks for pallet distribution in Saint-Etienne.

Pedro Ferreira, warehouse and distribution manager of SCC, said: "Over the past 10 years, teams from SCC and XPO have collaborated closely on supply chain improvements, including a reduced carbon footprint. These new LNG and CNG vehicles are further proof of our joint commitment to a sustainable supply chain.”

Gas-powered tractors are estimated to generate approximately a 95% reduction in polluting particles emissions and a 70% reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions, compared to diesel-powered tractors. In addition to investing in alternative transport technologies, XPO works closely with customers to design innovative supply chain solutions, optimize flow management and train drivers in eco-driving techniques.

Luis Gómez, managing director–transport, XPO Logistics Europe, said: "Investing in alternative fuels is part of our longstanding commitment to sound environmental practices. We’re keen to introduce these solutions whenever possible to support our customers in meeting requests from their own customers for more sustainable transport.”
